Dhow Dinner Cruise in Dubai: What to Expect on an Evening Cruise

Dubai Travel Guides

A dhow dinner cruise is one of the most relaxing ways to end a day in Dubai. You board a traditional wooden boat, enjoy dinner on deck and watch the city lights slide past from the water. It suits couples, families and groups, and it is a perfect plan after a busy day of sightseeing. Here is what to expect.

What is a dhow?

A dhow is a traditional wooden sailing boat that has been used for trade and fishing in the Gulf for centuries. Today many dhows have been adapted for dinner cruises, with a covered lower deck, an open upper deck and tables for guests, while keeping their classic wooden look.

Dubai Marina or Dubai Creek?

Dhow cruises usually run in one of two areas, and each has its own atmosphere:

  • Dubai Marina: modern Dubai, with tall towers, waterfront promenades and bright lights all around you. A good choice if you love skylines and night photos.
  • Dubai Creek: old Dubai, along the historic waterway where the city began, with traditional neighbourhoods, souks and smaller boats crossing the water. A good choice if you prefer culture and heritage.

The route depends on the date you choose; we confirm it with you before you pay.

What happens on board

  • Boarding: you arrive at the boarding point in the evening, are welcomed on board and shown to your table.
  • The cruise: the dhow sails slowly along the water so you can enjoy the views from the deck.
  • Dinner: a dinner is served on board, often as a buffet with international and local dishes. If you have dietary needs (vegetarian, allergies, children’s meals), tell us when you book so we can check with the operator.
  • Atmosphere: music and, on some cruises, light entertainment. It is a calm, social evening rather than a party.

Best time to go

The cooler months, from about October to April, are the most pleasant for sitting on the open upper deck. In summer the evenings are still warm, but the covered, air-conditioned deck keeps you comfortable. Weekends and holidays are popular, so book a few days ahead if you have a fixed date.

What to wear and bring

  • Smart casual clothes; a light jacket or shawl for the breeze in winter.
  • Comfortable shoes for stepping on and off the boat.
  • Your phone or camera for night photos of the skyline.
  • Any medication you may need if you are sensitive to motion (the water is usually calm).

Dhow cruise or private yacht?

A dhow cruise is a shared, relaxed dinner experience with a traditional feel. If you prefer privacy and a modern boat just for your group, a private yacht in Dubai Marina or a 2-hour private yacht for 4 people may suit you better. Read our private yacht guide to compare.

Combine it with other experiences

The dhow cruise is the perfect end to a full day. Combine it with a Dubai city tour, a visit to the Dubai Frame or, on another day, a classic desert safari (see our desert safari guide). First time in Dubai? Follow our 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors.
